What you'll need to know before joining

Before we begin our next adventure, there are a few important things we need to go over to make sure this campaign is the right fit for everyone. Our goal is for every player to have a great experience, and that starts with setting clear expectations and making sure this campaign aligns with what you’re looking for as a player.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, Legend of Ten Towns is not a beginner-friendly campaign. We recommend new players start with other adventures we offer, such as Heroes of Faerûn. This campaign is better suited for players who are already familiar with Dungeons & Dragons and its core mechanics, and would be considered an intermediate-level adventure.

Legend of Ten Towns is a darker, horror-themed campaign set in a harsh and unforgiving world where survival is never guaranteed. The dangers are real, the choices are difficult, and character death is far more common than in beginner-focused adventures. For brand-new players, this can make the experience overwhelming rather than enjoyable, which is why we recommend starting elsewhere before braving the frozen north.

Unfortunately, these are not free-to-play adventures. We understand that paid games aren't for everyone, but there are real costs involved in running a high-quality TTRPG experience. Through platforms like StartPlaying, you're able to find games that fit your schedule, preferred playstyle, and budget. What you're paying for isn't just a seat at the table. It's a consistent, well-run experience.

At Chef's Dungeon, we focus on delivering that value. We maintain an active and organized Discord community, invest in tools and features that enhance gameplay, and continuously improve the overall experience for our players. A portion of our monthly proceeds also goes toward supporting German Shepherd rescues.

You're going to need a few things before you get started in your next adventure. All of the things we cover are free for our players to use and will not cost you any additional money. We'll start with the services you will need to sign up for in order to join an adventure:
  • Discord - For general Chat and Voice Channels
  • D&D Beyond - For your character sheet
  • Beyond20 - This isn't necessary but most players prefer it
  • Google Account - For reading google docs (like the rules document)
You will also need to have the following hardware to join the campaign:
  • A computer or Laptop
  • Microphone or Headset
  • Notebook (If you want to keep notes)
  • Stable Internet Access (Can Test your internet here)
  • Required Internet Speed: 15-25 Mbps download
You cannot use your phone, tablet, or game systems (like playstation 5) in subsitution of a computer.

The virtual tabletop (Foundry VTT) only works on computers & Laptops. Other devices will not work for this VTT. It's also adviced you do not try to run this VTT on a work computer. We are not liable for any trouble using a work computer may cause you. It's adviced you use your own personal computer or laptop.

This Adventure takes place in the Faerûn Region, which is a very famous region of the world Toril. Many adventurers have visited this region and have many tales to tell about the experiences they've had in Faerûn. As you start this adventure, we'll start in the far north area of Icewind Dale. This region is known for brutal blizzards, deadly avalanches, and dangerous beasts that stalk the snowy mountain passes. You will definitely need cold weather gear for this adventure! Cold weather gear will cost an adventurer 10 gold pieces and can be bought before session 0! About Cold Weather Gear Here!

In this Adventure, you will get a chance to experience major cities like Ten Towns, Ironmaster, Fireshear, Mirabar, and Luskan as you travel through the winter horrors of Icewind Dale. Your journey begins in one of the Ten Towns, chosen at random by the roll of the dice. Having just arrived, you find yourself caught in the early stages of a blizzard that has forced you off the road in search of shelter. Seeking warmth, food, and perhaps a place to stay for the night, you step into a local tavern—if the town is fortunate enough to have an inn attached. Unless your character originally comes from this specific town, these frozen streets and unfamiliar faces are entirely new to you. As you enter, you notice the tavern is strangely quiet. Only a handful of patrons linger inside, and not a single one seems to pay any attention to your arrival.

There's a lot of options for you to choose from for your backstory in the Faerûn Region. You can have endless amount of options when choosing a location. Finding lore and Information for the locations through sites like Forgotten Realms Wiki is a huge help. There are so many locations within Faerun that you can choose to place yourself. You don't even have to specifically choose a location within the Sword Coast North Region.

Looking for a visual map of Faerûn? D&D Beyond offers a free map. Just click the button below, and it'll bring you to a full sized Faerûn map. If you're having trouble zooming in and out on the map, use `ctrl` + mouse wheel. It's a very large map and will require zoom tool + the scroll bars on the bottom and right sides of your web browser to move around the map. Trying to click and move (like on google maps) will not work.

Most of the adventures will be weekly sessions. It's rare that Chef will post adventures that run biweekly or monthly. Majority of the people looking for games directly though startplaying are looking for weekly sessions for their next adventure. Chef might post biweekly or monthly ran adventures and will have that info posted on the official startplaying.games adventure page rather than here. This page will just show days and times.
